Steps To Clean Skylights

Follow these five steps to clean your skylights properly:

Get The Right Supplies

Before jumping into this project, you must have the right supplies on hand for the task. Make sure you are equipped with the following:

Bucket
Rags Or Cloths
Long Mop Or Broom
Duct Tape
String
Mild Dish Soap
Plastic Tarp
Distilled White Vinegar
Towel Or Microfiber

Prepare Area

Once you have gathered all the proper materials for the job, it’s time to prepare the area for clean up. First, start by either moving or covering all nearby furniture. Next, place your plastic tarp on the floor, laying directly under the skylight. The tarp will be used to catch any fallen debris in the area. Mix your bucket with one gallon of water and a small amount of dish soap and swish. Place a dry rag at the end of the mop handle and use this to sweep back and forth.

Wash Skylights Gently

Remove the cloth from the pole, replacing it with a new one. Dip the cloth-covered end of the pole into your bucket mixed with water and dish soap. Wring out the excess water and begin washing at the top left corner of the pane. Work horizontally, then clean the light vertically. Wipe in a circular motion until the skylight has been wiped completely.

Rinse Thoroughly

Once the pane has been cleaned, empty and rinse the bucket. Replace it with fresh water and remove the rag from the pole. Wipe the entire skylight surface pane using the clean rag and fresh water. If needed, go over the pane a second time.

Minimize The Streaking

After removing the rag used to rinse the area, put a new dry towel or cloth on the pole. Remove any excess water by using side-to-side wipes, both vertically and horizontally.
